How to setup gift notes

A personalized note in a package makes a huge impact on your customers! 

Learn how to unlock it in this article.

Why activate the gift note feature?

Activating the gift note will allow you to offer to your customers a completely personalized delivery experience. This will increase customer satisfaction, which will lead to more sales!

All you need to do is set it up.

How does it work? Your buyer adds a personalized message in the cart page. We then print on the delivery note.

How to activate this feature?

Two ways to activate the gift note on Shopify

  • Using Shopify cart notes Recommended
    It is the standard no-code method. You will leverage a functionality powered by Shopify displaying a text field in the cart page.
  • Using a custom cart attribute ↗
    It requires editing the store source code and use a custom cart attribute bigblue-gift-note (for tech-savvy merchants or your developer). It should be used in the following cases:
    - You are already using Shopify cart notes for another purpose which you want to keep
    - You want to change how or where the field appears
    - Or your store template does not display the default notes

Tutorial - Using Shopify cart notes

Alongside the video, you can also use the textual tutorial below split in three simple steps:

1. Shopify Admin | Activate the field in your cart page
  • Open your Shopify Admin
  • Click on “Online store”, you are in the "Themes" section

  • Then, click on the right-hand side button "Customize"

  • In the middle dropdown menu, select the “Cart” page

  • On the left panel, click on "Cart Page" then "Enable cart notes". With some themes, this field may be called "Enable order notes"


    💡 Note: In some Shopify Themes like "Prestige" you won't see the checkbox here but the field already exists and is displayed in your cart page.

2. Shopify Admin | Change the field label
  • Navigate back to your Shopify Admin, in your "Online Store" on the "Themes" section
  • Click on the button "Actions ⌔" choose the menu item "Edit languages"
  • Select the “cart” tab and Scroll down to Note. Edit the label with "Add a free gift note"
    💡 Note: In some Shopify Themes like "Prestige", you will also need to update some other texts
    In this case, you should update all 4 fields in the image below:

    Text 🇫🇷 French 🇬🇧 English
    Add note Add a free gift note Pour offrir ? Ajouter une note cadeau
    Edit note Edit gift note Éditer la note cadeau
    Save note Save Sauvegarder
    Note placeholder Leave a note to the gift recipient Laissez un mot au destinataire du cadeau
  • You can then edit the field label for every translation you have in your boutique.
3. Bigblue App | Activate the gift notes feature in Bigblue
  • Open your Bigblue App
  • Click on Shop Integrations, then open your Shopify shop settings
  • In the gift notes section, select the option "Enable using Shopify cart notes" 

3. (optional) Shopify & Bigblue | Test the setup
  • In Shopify, add a product to your cart, open the cart page and verify that the field is displayed
  • Then, place a test order. On your Shopify admin, in the order page, make sure the notes are displayed
  • Finally, in the Bigblue admin app, open the order and in the fulfillment section, open the delivery note and make sure the message was added

Woocommerce

1. Woocommerce | Add the field in your checkout, and edit its text

In a nutshell, we will guide you to add a plugin to easily edit the field and its label. 

  • Go to your Wordpress Admin, click on the "Plugin" section ("Extensions")
  • Add the plugin "Checkout Field Editor (Checkout Manager) for Woocommerce" (link)
  • Go back to Woocommerce, you can see now a section "Checkout Form" (in French, "Formulaire de validation de commandes"). Click it.
  • Go the the "Additional fields" tab, enable the order_comments field (click the checkbox and then on the button "Save changes)". If it is already activated, go on to the next step.
  • On the order_comments line, click on "Edit" ("Modifier")
  • Edit the text for the label and placeholder
    • Label: 🇫🇷"Pour offrir ? Ajoutez un message personnalisé"  / 🇬🇧"Add a free gift note"
    • Placeholder: Guide the buyer with an example, for instance  🇫🇷"Bon anniversaire Camille !" /  🇬🇧"Happy birthday Joe!"

2. Bigblue App | Activate the gift notes feature in Bigblue
  • Go to the Bigblue App, click on Shop Integrations
  • Click on your Wocoomerce shop
  • Activate the Print gift notes switch

4. (optional) Woocommerce & Bigblue | Test the setup
  • In your store, add a product to your cart, open the checkout page and verify that the field is displayed
  • Then, place a test order. On your Woocommerce admin, in the order page, make sure the notes are displayed
  • Finally, in the Bigblue admin app, open the order and in the fulfillment section, open the delivery note and make sure the message was added

Other CMS

FAQ

  • I would prefer a custom paper. Is it possible? We know the Delivery Note is not a separate rigid paper. Yet it is a great feature to those who are shipping gifts directly to the recipient. The recipient will be very happy to read the note inside package on the Delivery Note. It is a way for your brand to offer a special attention to gifts.
  • Can I change the wording "Add a free gift note" in Shopify?
    Yes. But we recommend to keep the default wording we have proposed:
    🇬🇧 Add a free gift note /🇫🇷 Ajoutez un message cadeau
  • What if my customer wants to edit their note?

    You can edit it on Shopify via the Notes Edit button.

  • What if I already use the field notes for another purpose?

    You may realize that you already use the store field notes for order specifications or other purposes.

    2 possible scenarios

    • You want to change and use it for gift notes 
      ⇒ Follow the tutorial appropriate to your shop, skipping the field activation step in your store and only editing the field
    • You want to keep using it
      ⇒ Shopify: Follow the custom cart attribute tutorial and add both fields to the cart page
      ⇒ Woocommerce: This is not possible at the moment. Contact support for help.
